An Interview with Willis

April 3, 2025

We chatted with Nashville-based band Willis ahead of their shows at El Rey Theatre (LA) and Great American Music Hall (SF) about growing up together, their viral hit, and their pre-show ritual.

You gained a lot of new fans with the viral "I Think I Like When It Rains" – what should they listen to next?

Depends on what kind of mood you're in. We’ve got songs for every moment, emotion, event. Just hit shuffle and see what hits.

You guys met in high school – what's it like growing up in a band together?

Like a really long group project that turned out alright. It’s family at this point.

How has your sound changed? Who have been your long-term musical influences?

Our sound’s grown up with us. We still chase what feels good in the room, but we’ve gotten sharper at catching it. We’re influenced by the stuff we grew up on, but honestly, we end up influencing ourselves just by pushing each other to try weird ideas and make them work.

What is your favorite track to perform live? Any deep cuts?

It changes every night. Some songs hit harder in certain cities, some surprise us mid-set. We try to give each track its moment—deep cuts included. We like when the crowd knows one we didn’t expect them to.

Do you have any pre-show group rituals?

Quick huddle. Nothing mystical. Just syncing up before the lights hit.

What is your craziest memory from touring thus far?

We could give you a wild story, but honestly, it’s the weird in-between moments that stick – random gas station people, late-night drives, watching a city wake up while we're still half-asleep.

What are you most excited for in 2025?

New music, new shows, new places. We’re releasing some singles and seeing where they take us. That, and maybe a vacation if the stars align.
