An Interview with Vanessa Zamora

May 10, 2025

We sat down with Mexican singer-songwriter Vanessa Zamora who walked us through her sonic evolution, carving her space in the Latin alternative scene, and her dream collaborators ahead of her Pride show at The Roxy.

How has your sound evolved from Hasta la Fantasía to Damaleona and beyond?

My sound has evolved naturally over the years. Hasta la Fantasía was dreamy and nostalgic, Tornaluna explored deeper emotional landscapes with richer textures, and Damaleona is bold, raw, and experimental. With every album, I aim to evolve and surprise myself sonically and personally.

Is there a song in your catalog that you feel best represents who you are as an artist right now?

Right now, I’d say Damaleona as a whole really captures who I am as an artist. It represents my strength, vulnerability, sensuality, and creative freedom. At the same time, I’m revisiting Tornaluna this year. Something in me needed to awaken that emotional, introspective side again. That’s why I’m releasing it on vinyl this year. It still speaks to a deep part of who I am.

How does your LGBTQ+ identity influence your music and artistry?

A lot. The moment I realized I was a lesbian everything started to make sense in my life. Things began to fall into place. Sexuality is a very powerful force, and once you’re able to connect with it, it shows up in every part of your life. That clarity and freedom are deeply reflected in my art and the way I see the world.

Do you feel a responsibility to represent a particular voice or message in the Latin alternative scene?

More than a responsibility, it's something I live. Music is the perfect vehicle to carry messages that matter, and through it, I can represent voices like mine: queer, independent, emotional, and experimental. The Latin alternative scene is expanding, and I’m proud to be part of a wave that brings more freedom, honesty, and diversity to the table.

How do you prepare for a show or tour? Is there any physical, mental, or spiritual work that goes into preparing your set?

A show is a ceremony. Sometimes I prepare by meditating, journaling, or grounding myself. Other times I don’t prepare at all and just let the improvised, instinctive part of me lead. Either way, I see it as a sacred moment. Just as I open myself up, I know many of my fans do too and that shared energy is incredibly powerful.

Who are your dream collaborators?

I’d love to make music with Rosalía, Kali Uchis, Natalia Lafourcade, Charli XCX... just to name a few. But honestly, there are so many.

What's next for Vanessa Zamora?

I’m working on a lot of new songs and fully diving into my creative world right now. Something big is definitely coming. This year, I’m playing shows in places I’ve never been before and releasing the Tornaluna vinyl, which feels really special. It’s all part of an exciting new phase in my journey.
