An Interview with The Summer Set x The Cab

April 13, 2026

Fourteen years after interviewing each other for Buzz Mates, Brian Logan Dales (The Summer Set) and Alex DeLeon (The Cab) are back to ask each other burning questions exclusively for Goldenvoice. This dynamic duo co-headlined a tour together back in 2012 and are both making a return to LA’s music scene with their respective bands this year.

Don’t miss The Summer Set at El Rey Theatre on April 18 and The Cab at Fonda Theatre on June 1. Remaining tickets on sale now!

Alex DeLeon asks Brian Logan Dales…

Alex DeLeon: It has been around 1 year since the release of your single “Adidas” from your album Meet Me At The Record Store. What has been your favorite part of this era of The Summer Set so far?

Brian Logan Dales: This tour! I am very proud of this album, and I think it’s the best batch of songs we’ve ever made— but we’ve been a band for a long time, so I went into this tour thinking fans were mostly just looking forward to hearing the old stuff. The way they’ve responded to the new record live has been a dream come true.

AD: What is your favorite The Cab song and why is it “Living Louder”?

BD: My favorite Cab song is “Temporary Bliss”, and it has been since we listened to it 150 times in my old car in the parking lot of Saddle Ranch on Sunset Blvd, but I think “Back From The Dead” could give it a run for its money.

AD: What is your favorite The Summer Set song and why is it “young”?

BD: Haha my favorite TSS song is PROBABLY “Dizzy” or “Flowers” but thanks for asking.

AD: What is your most listened to song of 2025 from your Spotify Wrapped or Apple Recap?

BD: It was “Holy Roller” by The Format. Their first song in 20 years and suddenly I’m 16 years old all over again.

AD: What’s the one Summer Set song that hits completely differently now than it did when you wrote it?

BD: Honestly, “Chelsea” feels like it’s taken a life of its own now. It’s like being shot out of a cannon every time we play it.

AD: If you had to relive one tour from start to finish, which one would it be?

BD: I mean, you know it’s the Everything’s Fine, Symphony Soldier co-headliner we did in 2012. Should we run it back?

AD: If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice before the band took off, what would it be?

BD: Slow down. Stop trying to read ahead. You get to travel the world for living, remember to take it all in.

AD: What’s a song you wrote that you think deserved way more attention than it got?

BD: “The Night Is Young” maybe. That song feels like it’s a nostalgic classic that I forget I even wrote something. But I also feel like we have a lot of songs that didn’t quite get the attention they deserved!

AD: Which artist influenced you the most that fans would never expect?

BD: I’m obviously a Springsteen lover but I think people who know that know. I think maybe Adam Duritz and Counting Crows in the way I think about specificity and personal details in lyrics.

AD: How has LA shaped your career and music?

BD: I’ve lived in LA now longer than anywhere I’ve ever lived. Throughout all the ups and downs and every phase of life— LA has given me something to write about. Love, heartbreak, pain, joy, and beyond. I’m not sure I would be who I am without it.

AD: What is your favorite Cab X Summer Set memory that involved you sleeping in the back of a van and swapping band members for a drive?

BD: Look, let’s just say I didn’t know the cookies were weed cookies, ok?

AD: What was your first impression of me?

BD: The human equivalent of the Energizer Bunny. Pretty sure the first night we met was a warped tour kick off at like Box 8 maybe?

AD: In our 2012 interview, you stated that your pet mythical creature of choice would be a Hippogriff (From Harry Potter). Is that still the case today? Will you be tuning in to the new Harry Potter series?

BD: I went back and rewatched this interview and my GOD we were insufferable back then.

AD: Is Nala from The Lion King still your favorite Disney Princess?

BD: Always.

Brian Logan Dales asks Alex DeLeon…

Brian Logan Dales: What song from your new album are you most excited to play live?

Alex DeLeon: “Locked and Loaded”. Without hesitation or a thought. I just think I need to hit the treadmill for the next 6 weeks to make sure I am able to keep up with the energy that the song demands. haha. I think that “Locked and Loaded” specifically really personifies who and what The Cab is and what we stand for.

BD: You’re to embark on your first full-length headlining tour in over a decade— what deeper cut are you most excited to play that you didn’t get to play on the support/festival run?

AD: We have a song called "Intoxicated" that we haven't played live much. It has always been a fan favorite, so I am hoping that we can roll up our sleeves and pull that out for them this tour.

BD: What is your favorite Summer Set song that ISN’T our song “Young”?

AD: Who is The Summer Set?

BD: You’ve been to more countries on planet earth than anyone I know—is there one in particular you’d love to play a show in?

AD: The Cab has never played ANYWHERE in Europe. It genuinely upsets me. I hope we play Europe ASAP, and I hope it is with The Summer Set, whoever they are.

BD: And for the opposite -- which city are you most excited to revisit and play a Cab show in?

AD: I am counting down the seconds for us to play the East Coast in the U.S again. It has been over a decade. To be able to play NYC, Boston, Philly... just feels like a fever dream to us. Counting down the seconds. The East Coast always shows up. Hoping the West Coast hears this as fighting words and beats them out.

BD: Remember in 2013 when we threw you a week of birthday parties? I guess my question is…why? Do you think you’re special?

AD: I do not need a reason to throw a party. I will literally throw a party for it being a Wednesday. Birthday week is an easy way to justify and guilt all of your friends and favorite people to get weird. You should have seen me the day Meet Me at the Record Store released.

BD: But also, you make it a point to do a trip for your birthday every year. I’ve been on a few of them. Which trip would you say has been your favorite?

AD: My wife and I got married on our birthday week. We share the same birthday week in April, so we decided to just combine it all. Instead of a honeymoon, we just invited everyone to stay in Mexico for a week, and maybe a third of the wedding did so; it was absolutely incredible for us. To have all of your favorite people in one place is part of what throwing a wedding is all about.

BD: You’re a lifelong Disney parks lover—is it different visiting the parks with your daughter, and why?

AD: It's truly like going for the first time all over again. Seeing the magic through her eyes... her not realizing yet that there is a person underneath the masks and costume heads (Don't you dare ever tell her or I'll kill you).. it's just an absolute blast. I thought she was going to pass out when she met Anna and Elsa for the first time. We will for sure be going the day after our tour stop in Anaheim. I can't wait until she can go on all of the rides!

BD: Speaking of your daughter, in what ways do you think fatherhood has changed your songwriting and overall experience as a musician?

AD: I cry. Constantly. I feel everything 25% more. She teaches me constantly. Everything I do is for her. I saw a video of her watching me perform and how happy she seemed, and it was a top moment of my entire life. At home, I am "dada," but when she saw me onstage... and when I saw her FROM the stage.. it's truly indescribable.

BD: You’ve lived in NYC, Nashville, Los Angeles, and grew up in Las Vegas—all of which are landmark cities for music and entertainment. Which one would you say has best shaped your craft as a songwriter?

AD: Los Angeles. When we were younger and starting out, EVERY big writer and producer was in Los Angeles. It felt like music boot camp. Nashville is my favorite music city, but it's very laid back. Los Angeles had higher stakes. You always feel like you have to be at your best because good sessions are hard to get, and you have to book ahead like crazy.

BD: And which one has shaped your craft as a performer?

AD: Los Angeles as well. People who live in LA are so used to seeing artists, concerts, good shows, hearing good songs... that when you perform or release anything, the bar is so damn high. You really have to be unique or just GREAT to stand out to people watching.

BD: What is your favorite thing about writing songs with me?

AD: Outside of being one of the best human beings I know and one of my favorite songwriters, I would have to say that being in the presence of your good looks is my favorite thing. When you write with your best friends, it's really easy to be vulnerable, to tell the truth, and to really feel and trust the opinions and thoughts around you.

BD: Do you think we’ll ever finally get a country artist to come to their senses and cut “I See You In Her?”

AD: This still may be my favorite song I have ever written. When I show people and listen to the full thing, I still cry. Now that I have a daughter, it hits me 50 times harder. I hope people hear it someday. BTW Can we go back to the Smoky Mountains and write again asap?

BD: Whose heads are on your Mount Rushmore of musical influences?

AD: Timberlake, Mercury, Sinatra, Lauryn, and André 3000.

BD: What song am I singing with you at your LA show?

AD: Only the LA show???? You choose. You sing better than me so I will gladly take the rest.

BD: I’m just curious, have you ever tried to steal a car?

AD: I hate you. But yes, and I succeeded. I almost got arrested three times in one night. Somehow, I made it through. That whole night was probably your fault. Thank you for being my best worst friend and worst best friend.
