An Interview with Obskuros

May 1, 2026

We had the chance to chat with Los Angeles homegrown band Obskuros< ahead of their headline show at El Rey Theatre on Friday, May 15. They shared key influences behind their debut album La Puerta and what’s the next step on their journey.

You just released your debut album, La Puerta. Can you tell us about some of the influences on this album?

A majority of the album was influenced by personal experiences. The topics vary from experiences with severe sleep paralysis, insecurities showing up in nightmares, heartbreak and love songs. There’s influences from boleros from the 50s and 60s which is different from what you might hear in the genre of post punk. Romanticism is very strong in our sound and in boleros, so it felt natural to incorporate it into our album.

How did this album eventually take its shape?

The album is essentially a collection of what Obskuros has grown to be over the years. There are songs that were written from a couple years back and some that were written that same year it was released. There were many songs to choose from before finally settling on the official 13 tracks that fit the story and theme.

What emotion or state of mind kept resurfacing while you were writing this album?

A lot of the writing is centered from the euphoric feeling of being in love. Then there are more vulnerable songs like “La Barca” where it talks about the acceptance of heartbreak and the scars it leaves behind.

LA has a deep history with goth and underground scenes. Where do you feel Obskuros fits into that lineage?

For us, it's always felt like people in the community really root for us and show so much love. It's hard to believe we would be considered in the lineage of so many other talented artists, but we’re definitely grateful for every fan and our listeners for really embracing us and accepting us into the goth and underground scene.

What kind of energy do you expect (or want) from your crowd during a live show?

We love when the crowd just lets go and gets lost in the music. Whether they just dance or sing, seeing that makes us happy and reassured we’re doing something right.

How are you planning to translate the studio atmosphere of La Puerta into a live performance?

There will be small details in our set that will hopefully enhance the feeling of the album. We can’t share too much!

If La Puerta opens a door, what do you hope is on the other side for listeners?

We hope that they hear and feel the emotion behind each song and remain open to what's to come. Our sound is growing and we feel we are creating something a little different but true to heart. We hope our listeners get to experience it with us at every future live event.

What’s next for Obskuros after this release cycle?

We would absolutely love to tour the U.S. soon. What’s certain is we have way more music to release this year too!
