An Interview with Madison McFerrin

September 29, 2025

Singer-songwriter and producer Madison McFerrin talks shaping her sound, her dream festival lineup, and collaborating with Tyler, The Creator ahead of her headlining show at The Roxy.

Your family has such a rich musical legacy, but your style is uniquely your own. Was there a specific moment when you realized you’d carved out your own lane?

I think it's been a series of moments. My sound is inherently (no pun intended) my brother's, my father's, my grandfather's – I feel like my sound is a bit of a melting pot of them all. Having a lot of influences makes it the case that there's a lot of inspiration to choose from. At the end of the day, I'm just making music that feels right and sounds cool to me, and I just hope that resonates with other folks. I think it's working!

Your music often blends soul, R&B, and electronic elements. If you could design a dream festival lineup that complements your sound, who would be on the bill?

Oh, my goodness, there are definitely too many folks to name! If we're only dealing with the living, I definitely need Stevie, Jill Scott, Erykah, Hiatus Kaiyote, Tyler, Kendrick, Solange, Beyoncé, Flying Lotus, Chaka Khan, The Roots, Radiohead... would bring back James Brown, The Beatles, Whitney, and Aretha if I could!

You recently collaborated with Tyler, The Creator on his new album. What was the most surprising or fun part of working on that project?

Honestly, just how chill the whole thing was from start to finish. It was really cool to be able to hang and vibe with someone I admire as much as Tyler. I'm super honored he thought of me to be a part of DON'T TAP THE GLASS.

Outside of music, you’ve talked about being into puzzles and brain games. What’s your go-to way to unwind when you want to completely unplug?

When I need to completely unplug, at the very least I'm going for a walk. I try and take a walk every morning (when I'm home and LA's not in a heatwave) and I always leave my phone at home so that I at least have 30 minutes where I know I'm not tied down to technology. I got pretty into Tetris after the car accident that inspired "(Please Don't) Leave Me Now" off my debut album – it's proven to minimize PTSD, look it up!

You’ve mentioned in past interviews that you’re into cooking. What’s your signature dish, and is there a song of yours you’d pair it with for the perfect vibe?

I can't say that I have a "signature dish" per se, I love cooking a lot of different meals! My fiancé really loves my Korean fried chicken, which I only make on special occasions since it's pretty labor intensive. I think it probably pairs nicely with "Ain't It Nice" and a cold IPA.
