An Interview with Hockey Dad & Remo Drive

What about this tour are you most excited for?

HD: We love coming back to the U.S. and catching up with friends we have met through the years. Touring in America is so different to Australia because there’s so many more huge cities with so much more to do. Super excited to see the rest of the lineup shred every night too!

RD: We’re just excited to be on the road again!

What can people expect from this show?

HD: Right now, we’re playing a huge mix of songs off our new record with a few old timers sprinkled in. We’ve stepped up our production game since last time we were here so expect to get more than you bargained for.

RD: An energetically performed rock gig.

What’s your guilty pleasure song?

HD: “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flats – we were playing this non-stop in the UK last month and we all loved/hated it.

RD: No guilt, but we’ve been having a lot of fun playing “Sex on Fire” in soundcheck.

Top three musical influences?

HD: This usually changes for us every 4 to 6 weeks so as of now let’s go Wilco, Parquet Courts, and The Lemon Twigs.

RD: It’s always shifting, but The Beatles, David Bazan, and Father John Misty are perennial favorites.

Who’s your dream dinner guest?

HD: Larry David

RD: Joey Chestnut – love to see the master at work.

Thematically your new album title, Rebuild Repeat seems to suggest a cyclical pattern. Can you share a bit more about the concept behind this record and how you approached recording it compared to your previous projects?

HD: The approach to recording the record kind of inspired the name and the concept around it. We had been writing in different kinds of ways and exploring new methods for a few years before we went in and made this record. We kind of went back to the way we did the first few releases when we were really young. First thought = best thought. We tried to minimize the amount of overdubs and extra fancy gear on these songs and just do them how we would have a long time ago. It felt like building a new beast but with the same raw materials which was the two of us.

Your band is named after a video game featured in an episode of The Simpsons. Can you share any other unexpected facts about the band that fans may not know?

HD: Every record we put out prior to Rebuild Repeat started with the letter B. Purely an accident but it's kinda funny.

Your most recent album, Mercy was made after Erik moved to Albany, New York while Stephen stayed in Minnesota. What was it like making this album while living apart? How did you maintain your creative process or did it change in any way?

RD: Our creative process didn’t change too much. I’ve always written the skeletons of the songs in isolation. Ever since our first record, we’ve done arrangements very quickly and spontaneously. Once we’re all playing in a room, it’s pretty easy to tell if something is exciting us or not!

As brothers, what was it like growing up together before you started making music?

RD: It was great – our friendship is the bedrock of our relationship. We feel very lucky to get along as well as we do!

The two of you recorded and produced a couple of your albums in your parents’ basement. Did your parents ever come in and offer their opinions?

RD: No, they will pop in and listen every once in a while but are very respectful of our personal autonomy/creative process.
