An Interview with HAYLA

November 26, 2024

We had the pleasure of chatting with HAYLA ahead of her Los Angeles headline debut at The Roxy, covering all things from fashion to vocal techniques and more.

Your debut album just came out – congrats! You’ve said that it took you three years to make. What did you learn about yourself as an artist (or as a person) while creating this body of work?

Thank you so much! If I’m honest, I think within the three years I really noticed my listening style, confidence, and writing style really grew and changed. I had a lot of life lived in those three years, so I could draw in different emotions and perspectives throughout this time. I actually didn’t feel any pressure when it came to this release as every track in this album flowed extremely naturally. It was definitely one of the most cathartic pieces of work to pull together from a load of tracks that felt authentically me.

What was the most challenging part about creating DUSK?

If I’m really honest, it was choosing which tracks to place on the album and the order. I already had quite a few tracks that I absolutely loved and found trying to pick which ones to put on this album really hard, which I suppose is a nice problem to have. Then trying to find the right order for each track so that the listener gets to flow through the journey of each piece seamlessly from one to the next. Apart from this though, I have felt all the emotions. Self-doubt, pride, anxiety, excitement, and calmness. I hope people love this album as much as I loved creating it and working with the incredible collaborators involved in this project.

Your voice is truly one of a kind. What types of exercises or routines do you use to keep your vocal chords in shape?

Thank you so much!! Throughout the years, I try to maintain my voice by keeping hydrated and making sure not to over sing whenever I perform. I find that my voice is a lot healthier when I rest enough too. I warm up just before a set by way of breathing exercises and vowel exercises. I also use the water and straw technique which helps with vocal pressure by blowing bubbles in a steady motion into a glass of water.

Fashion is a large part of your artistic vision. Tell us a bit about the visual storytelling embedded in the clothes you wear.

I have always loved fashion but felt that maybe fashion or being into fashion was for somebody else and not me. However, these last few years I have really started to play with shape and texture (all be it in one colour palette). I dopamine dress off stage throwing things together that bring me joy and on stage and in shoots I have been fortunate enough to work with an incredible stylist called Beau Tiger Rae who has really helped switch up the way I look at fashion. He’s really given me license to play around with higher fashion and challenge myself.
