An Interview with Chase Petra

June 25, 2025

Long Beach trio Chase Petra shared their takes on the current DIY music scene, A24 movies, plus the struggles – and joys – of touring before their show at The Roxy.

Answers provided by Hunter Leigh Allen of Chase Petra.

You’re all part of the DIY/indie scene but have distinct sounds. How would you each describe your band's musical identity in one sentence?

I would describe our musical identity as a group with one simple instruction: never let them guess your next move.

If you had to cover a song from one of the other bands on the tour, which song would you choose and why?

Oh, that’s a tough one but I’d probably pick “I Fucked Yr Mom” by Sorry Mom because with a song title like that?? I mean, c’mon, that’s hilarious. Not to mention how fun the song itself seems to play.

What’s something you’ve learned from touring or playing shows that you wish you knew when you started?

Touring made me feel like I could do anything in the world. It was like I’d fought a bear and won because it is genuinely one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life. It’s also one of the most fulfilling. So, that said, there aren’t necessarily any practical skills I’d impart upon my pre-touring-self. Instead, I think I’d tell myself that feeling homesick and a little lonely sometimes shouldn’t come as a surprise or feel like a personal failure! It’s just part of being a human that’s sleeping in a new town every night!

What’s been a "holy shit, we’re really doing this" moment in your careers so far?

I feel this way on a regular basis tbh but any time we have to get on a plane for music feels crazy. Also, opening up for Enter Shikari definitely rearranged a few parts of my brain. That said, the most recent moment I had was while we were shooting the music video for “Have Faith, Horatio.” It was our first music video with a proper crew, and we had this lovely makeup artist, Shy, there and every time she touched up my lipstick or anything like that I was like woah, this is real. I’m not even putting on my own foundation hahaha!

Do you feel like there’s something unique about the indie/DIY scene right now compared to past generations?

Yes, but also, I don’t know that that’s ever not true. As in, every scene and subculture are unique and inimitable. I think the defining features of indie and DIY at present have a lot to do with growing accessibility, evolving technology, and a political climate that – in all its destruction – is both punishing and motivating to many marginalized people, including but not limited to people of color, women, and queer people. Watching that shift – or rather the influx of these folks into the scene – has been one of the most uplifting social trends I’ve ever witnessed in my life.

If you could soundtrack a movie with your music, what kind of movie would it be?

Oh, something that walks a thin line between comedy and drama. Probably a coming-of-age film; something giving Lady Bird. A24, hit me up.

What's coming up for you in 2025?

2025 feels like a big ol’ celebration, honestly. We finally put this album out and we’re so proud! So now we’re gonna hit the road, first on our Spring U.S. headliner and then with Origami Angel in the U.S. in the Summer, which we’re super stoked about!
