An Interview with The Bloody Beetroots

April 15, 2025

The baddest man in electronic music spoke with us about how he unwinds, his favorite parts about living in LA, and his craziest gig to date ahead of his 20th anniversary show at The Fonda Theatre.

What song from the new album are you most excited to perform live?

I’ve packed plenty of tracks into this new set – some never-before-heard bootlegs, my new singles "This is Blood" and “KILLING PUNK," plus a couple of unreleased joints I've been testing on the dance floor for a while. I've also remastered a few older gems to amplify their impact and keep them fresh. It's going to be an intense sonic journey.

How do you like to start your day?

When I’m off tour, I’m usually up around 6:30am. I whip up breakfast – oats, eggs, blueberries, and a pint of steaming black coffee – then eat in silence while I map out my day, check the news, and head out to train.

What’s your favorite way to unwind?

I'm all about finding silence since my life's usually chaotic. Whenever I have a chance for some peace, I fully embrace it before diving right back into the madness.

What’s a vice you want to give up?

Right now, I don't have any vices, but I certainly did in the past. Early in my music career, I smoked heavily and drank quite a bit, likely due to the pressures of constant touring and a chaotic lifestyle. In 2013, after dealing with a stress-related infection, I completely quit and haven't looked back since. I'm proud of making that decision.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?

As any self-respecting Italian, I’ve got a special weakness for extra-aged Parmigiano.

What’s your ideal date night?

I'm not into small talk, so I prefer to savor meaningful, quality time. An ideal date involves a relaxed aperitivo, a nice dinner at a quality spot, maybe a leisurely stroll, and plenty of time to talk and reflect on the world. A good date should be memorable and inspiring for both of us.

Where do you feel the most inspired?

I feel inspired every morning when I wake up, but my creative peak hits whenever I'm back in Italy. Life there feels slower and uniquely precious. Fewer distractions mean I can connect better with my creative flow.

What’s the last song you listened to (no cheating)?

I just left the gym listening to "Blackhole" by Architects.

What’s the last movie you watched?

A Finnish comedy called Heavy Trip.

What’s the last show you binged?

Just finished watching Adolescence.

What’s a book you most recently finished?

My Life of Crime, Redemption and Hollywood by Danny Trejo.

What’s something that always makes you smile?

My Mama.

What’s something that always makes you cry?

The Bloody Beetroots don’t cry.

What are three of your tour essentials?

Mask, boots, t-shirts.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

You can size a man up by how he handles his money and how he treats women.

If you could switch lives with someone (living or dead) for the day, who would it be and why?

I’m good with my life.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing instead?

I’d open a shack in some tropical paradise, whip up some Mojitos while spinning stories – barefoot and sun-scorched.

What’s a hidden talent you have?

Believe I’ve got a knack for picking up on signs from the universe around me – maybe it’s just a sixth sense, but there’s something there for sure.

What’s your favorite memory from this year so far?

In February of this year, I had an unforgettable weekend in London, where this new tour launched with a sold-out gig at the legendary Dingwalls in Camden Town. Friends, agents, and fresh faces from the London scene showed up, and it felt like the start of a new collective story – one I hope will echo through 2025 and beyond.

Those days were made even more special by filming “KILLING PUNK” with Bob Vylan, zooming through the outskirts of London on bikes – areas I’d only glimpsed in passing over the years. Good talks, good vibes, solid reflections on life and that sense of community binding our worlds.

Favorite Goldenvoice venue or memory?

So, you gotta know TBB and Goldenvoice have been rolling together for a long time now. My craziest memories? Definitely the fresh ones from The Roxy and a few years back at The Fonda Theatre – both sold out, both with different lineups. Then there were the two Coachella gigs, each with its own rowdy vibe, like riding a Tarantino-style rollercoaster.

In 2009, TBB rolled in as a DJ set at the Sahara Tent – pure, off-the-hook energy. It was the start of something big, and people were flying around like rockets. If you know that tent, then you know. In 2011, we came back with a full band lineup and Dennis Lyxzén from Refused as guest of honor (Danny DeVito was supposed to intro us on stage, but I guess he forgot...). Problem was, our production manager never factored in load-in/load-out times. With a DJ set, you plug and play; with a whole band, you’ve got risers to move, cables to run... Bottom line, we had a one- hour slot, and it had to stay one hour.

We kicked off, and halfway through I saw warning signs to cut it, but obviously I ignored them. The crowd was going nuts, dancing like crazy, all hyped for the best of the best. After a bunch of ignored signals, they finally yanked the power. That set me off. I jumped on the drum riser and dove like Superman at who I thought pulled the plug. One of my crew members snatched me midair and locked me in a backstage trailer to calm down, but I only chilled after tearing it up on the inside. Over the years, I’ve learned to redirect that energy where it belongs. These days, I only torch a piece or two of equipment... just messing around – but, yeah, I did that too. Now I’m... grown.

What’s your go-to bar or hangout spot in LA?

I love hitting up Angelino Trattoria & Pizzeria in Toluca Lake – it’s got that old-school Italian immigrant vibe that makes me feel right at home. I also dig El Compadre on Sunset, right across from Guitar Center; it’s a total classic in my book.

What’s your favorite restaurant?

There’s a Cuban spot in Marina del Rey called Mercedes Bar & Grille where they serve incredible egg whites with spinach, and the lady who waits on you is super friendly. The vibe’s always on point.

What’s your go-to In-N-Out order?

Double-Double protein style no onions.

Favorite way to spend 24 hours in LA?

Big breakfast with steak & eggs, early bike ride with my manager by the LA River, an hour of solid training, lunch dates, and hitting up some friends for a dog walk or a drive.

Hot take about the city?

Los Angeles has always been a city in constant evolution, and I feel like it’s changing again, with a deeper awareness of the social fabric that holds it together. It’s showing itself to be surprisingly altruistic and collectively united.

Least favorite place to go?

I couldn’t say

.

If you had to pick a neighborhood that most embodies your personality, which would it be?

My personality’s all over the map and often contradictory, ’cause I love to explore. And in its sprawling chaos, Los Angeles is basically one giant mystery waiting to be unraveled. I’ve lived pretty much everywhere around the city – Hollywood, Mid City, Marina del Rey, Burbank, Silverlake. I checked out Long Beach and liked it for the music scene; got a soft spot for Silverlake ’cause you can walk around, there’s tons of green, and you run into all kinds of interesting people. I’m still in exploration mode... and I don’t think that’ll ever end – guess it’s just in my nature.

Favorite hidden gem/local business?

The Red Lion Tavern in Silverlake.
